A kitten was found under a vending machine. Now she runs the station.

Early on October 14, 2025, a staff member arriving for the morning shift at Nakanocho Station heard a faint meowing. Under a vending machine was a tiny, malnourished kitten who could barely open her eyes. She was frightened of people and kept close to the traffic, so the workers carefully coaxed her out and took her to a vet.

They named her Nakano-san, after the station. The date turned out to be Japan's National Railway Day, which made the whole thing feel like it was meant to happen. Word spread fast. Grown-ups and schoolchildren came to the little station just to wish her well.

She works the ticket window on weekends, about two hours at a time. If she is tired, or simply does not feel like it, she takes the day off. This past week the station strung up a paper garland and a small cake, and marked her first birthday.

The Choshi Electric Railway is a 6.4 km rural line at the far eastern tip of Chiba, running old carriages between Choshi and the fishing town of Toka. It has flirted with bankruptcy for years and famously keeps the lights on by selling wet rice crackers.

Japan has a soft spot for cat stationmasters. Tama, at Kishi Station, once pulled a dying line back from the edge just by sitting there in a little cap. Nakano-san is the newest of that lineage, and the passengers keep coming.
